Kevin Montgomery
The Polish Club, Bristol - 13th October
2006
By Lois Elsden
It's True!
Tired
busy week at work
busy at home
. family bereavement
what do I need? A Kevin Montgomery concert! So
last night, Friday 13th October (ooer!) I headed up to the Polish
Club in Bristol. I was on my own but had a few giggles at memories
of being there with Hannah. I was hoping I might meet Willem from
Raul's forum but although I listened out for a Dutch accent I didn't
hear one, and the only guy I thought might look like a Netherlander
turned out to be from Plymouth.
Andrea Zonn was supporting Kevin and I knew nothing about her except
Kevin rated her, and he nearly always has excellent support (Carter
Wood, Jeff Finlin for example)
There
was not the huge crowd that a Roadtrippers gig gets in Bristol but
here was an enthusiastic and dedicated audience. I had spotted Kevin
near the bar (where else!) but hadn't seen the rather serious looking
Miss Zonn. I suddenly realised I was looking at her - Andrea was
on stage polishing her fiddle (well maybe just tuning it!) She is
much more beautiful than her photos show, she has wonderful sparkling
eyes and a lovely smile. Kevin came on stage to introduce her, and
his other guest, Rune Kjeldsen. The first time I ever saw the Roadtrippers
Rune was with them; he looked about 14 and didn't smile. Now he
looks older and was very smiley.
Andrea is as talented as she is lovely, a wonderful voice and a
great violin player. She has recently supported James Taylor on
tour - that must have been great! She sang a variety of songs with
Kevin on bv's.
Too
soon it was time for a break and we all scrambled to the bar and
to try to buy the cd Andrea had made with others to support children
affected by the tsunami of 2004. There were only 8 left and sadly
they had all gone by the time I got to the merchandising stall.
I bought her cd and Kevin's new one (it's True!)
Then
Kevin! With Andrea supporting him this time, and Rune playing several
different guitars including Kevin's he gave us a wonderful evening,
songs from his new cd (honestly, its True!) and many old favourites.
As usual I was enjoying myself too much to remember all of them,
let alone the order in which he sang them! It was a great evening
and Kevin was on good form with his usual mischievous sense of humour.
We heard all about the tour bus (do you know, he's been sleeping
on top of Rune for the whole tour!! In the top bunk obviously!)
Andrea was a wonderful foil, a great line in dry wit and comic put
downs which at times seemed to leave Kevin speechless! As usual
in any Kevin concert there was the surreal moment. Last night the
audience had to turn to the person on their right and massage their
shoulder. Fortunately I had two empty seats next to me. Was this
so Kevin could massage Andrea's shoulder? Then we had to turn to
the person on our left and say 'I love you!' I was on the end of
the row
but on Kevin's left was Rune!
A great evening, unfortunately I was too tired to stay and chat
so left to drive home, with two cds and my head full of music.
A thought: I think Kevin should seriously
thinking of doing a cd with Andrea, their voices complimented each
other so well. To have an album of them singing together would be
amazing.
Another thought: Andrea with the Roadtrippers? Her voice with Robert's
as bvs, her violin with the other instruments? What a sensation
that would be!
Songs (as I remember but I may have
added some that weren't played or missed out some that were - I
was so busy enjoying myself)
